X 4038 Expl: Dept; Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn{Mr Robinson}3/LG. 8th. Nov. 1928. Messrs. H.M. Hobson Ltd., 47-55 Acton Vale, London W.3. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Major Searight. We have now been able to run with the balanced 40/50 unit to KS.162. We find that if we fill the tank full, disconnect the gauge and then couple up, we have to run 35 miles before any pumping takes place. The pumping is then somewhat sluggish until we reach the 13-gall. mark, when it becomes reasonably good. This tank is the one which you saw, and we blocked the slot up which it was thought might impair the functioning of the pumping. We are rather concerned with the ineffectiveness of the top cup, also 3 galls. seems rather a long way to go before we get any pumping whatsoever. You will note that in its present position the top cup is somewhat masked by the curve of the tank - would it not be better facing towards the centre of the tank in side elevation - i.e., looking at it as seen on KS.162 ? Another trouble we have run into is that our dashboard unit is reading 1 1/4 galls. short on both these cars. If we adjust the liquid in the dashboard unit to zero with nothing in the tank, we can put in 1 1/4 galls. before any movement takes place and thereafter the gauge reads 1 1/4 galls. low. We suspect that the angle of the boss for the instrument on the tank is incorrect - on an experimental car tank it is of course easy to get this boss angle a few degrees out. However we anticipate that it is a manufacturing trouble and are merely letting you know as it may be useful information for other cases. contd :- | ||
