-2- HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RMS/ADS.8.31. contd. (3) Steering. You will observe that Hancock considers that he has brought the steering up to standard by fitting new tyres. We have repeatedly proved that worn tyres cause the steering to deteriorate. As there appears to be a little slack in the steering box we have asked him to fit a new one temporarily to see if it makes the steering less susceptible to tyre wear. Other experiments are in hand at Derby with the shimmy shackle designed by W.W. (4) Vapour lock on petrol pump. The vapour locking of the petrol pump is disturbing. We shall be sending the R.R. petrol pump out to Chateauroux during the next few days but it is doubtful whether this will overcome the trouble, which appears to be due to the arrangement of the feed pipes. We are relying on the petrol pump to enable us to use twin carburetters. (5) Suspension. These results again confirm that it is not possible to cater for all conditions with one shock absorber setting. It would appear that a single adjustment to enable the leak to be eliminated at will would be a great asset to our existing shock absorbers which would then satisfy people running across France and yet enable them to use their cars as town carriages. Experiments are being carried out with the sylphon. (6) Battery Box. We have not previously experienced this trouble and are therefore getting more information from CWH.
