re Carburation Experiments.

This note confirms conversation with HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GRY{Shadwell Grylls}, that we should like to try two S.U. carburetters on the Terraplane engine made up with sheet metal induction pipes similar to the scheme we are designing for our own Straight 8.

It is realised that the firing order of the engine is not the same, but nevertheless it is considered the experiment would be informative. Unfortunately a new camshaft would be required to reproduce the firing order we have in mind, but if we try first of all with the existing firing order we may decide it would be worth while producing a new camshaft.

The second experiment is to reinstate the thermostatic bypass on a Bentley chassis with a view to finding out how much more quickly the mixture lever can be put to normal. We shall be relying on this scheme for the SpectreCodename for Phantom III, and as you are aware we are hoping to produce a suitable grille for replacing the radiator shutters on this car. If in the end we fail to do this and have to return to radiator shutters on account of appearance we should then propose to use two thermostats, one on the cylinder head operating the bypass, and one controlling the shutters, as we think this particular chassis could stand the slightly extra application.

To make the shutters close when the engine is stopped would require an oil relay but we do not think this is called for with a thermostatic bypass on the cylinder and with Glycol in the cooling water for winter conditions.
