-2- With this taper packing fitted we make it possible to start and run the engine in the tick-over position on a gradient of 1 in 8.2 with an under-bonnet temperature of 84°C (extreme condition). With a normal bonnet temperature of 66°C it is possible to start in similar conditions to the above on a gradient of 1 in 7.3 and only a little more hand throttle opening permits an easy start on 1 in 5. With the carburetter tilted forward it was also found that starting and idling on a downhill gradient of 1 in 5 was very good and no detrimental effects were experienced at any time during our tests.
