Phantom III Steering. We have recently had a failure of a Timken bearing fitted to the roller of the steering of SS{S. Smith}-EX, which is interesting as an indication of the loading at this point. The bearing was a standard size Timken, No. A.4059, as shown on the attached sketch, fitted experimentally to obtain a quick trial and was of rather a light type for the application. The failure occured by the crushing of several rollers and resulted in a very heavy steering with considerable backlash. We do not consider that this failure need cause any concern about the standard bearings on Ph.III and 25 HP. as these are considerably more robust than the bearing which has failed.
