Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}17/KW. OUR REF. JNL/IS. [Handwritten note in blue pencil] Gry{Shadwell Grylls} - What is the position now? Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Messrs Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr Robotham. We thank you for your letter of November 1st, enclosing three photomicrographs. I telephoned you this morning to confirm that A.759 and A.1156 were unetched. Mr Grylls confirms this. Before being absolutely positive about A.1156, I should like to see its appearance after etching in alcohol picric acid. At this juncture I may state that neither drum shows the structure that we associate with Millenite, and while 759 much more nearly approaches what we have found to be the ideal structure than does A.1156, yet it is still far from that which we regard as ideal. More than this at this stage I do not wish to say, but on receipt of a photograph of A.1156 I will comment fully and, further, will send you a copy of the cast iron specification which we have found absolutely ideal on our large brake drum testing plant. I am experiencing a little delay in the production of the VM.30 discs promised to you, and am finding that burnishing is quite a job. However, I hope to be able to send you samples at the beginning of next week. May I take this opportunity of thanking you for your hospitality yesterday. Yours very truly, [Signature] Chief Chemist, FERODO LIMITED. | ||
