For the attention of Mr. Brooks.

Dear Sirs,

You will remember a short time ago supplying for test a batch of rings which were a slight modification to the usual "L" section rings normally fitted to our pistons. The alteration consisted of simply taking out less material to form the "L" section, thus leaving a stiffer ring in consequence.

The idea of this was primarily to give better gas control re "blow-by".

We would now like to go a stage further with this test, and as this is a bigger move, would appreciate your views.

Our idea is to replace the usual scraper ring with an "L" section ring, and this will mean certain fundamental alteration to the piston, the most important being the "heat-break" saw cut.

The ring set-up would then consist of two normal gas rings and one "L" section.

We shall beglad to hear your views regarding this suggestion, and suggest you produce a print of a piston modified in this way.

Yours faithfully,
for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
