To E.H. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to G.J. " " R.N. ORIGINAL X.1295 X.2650 X.2628 RE NEW 40/50 H.P. CAR. I understand that Mr. Barrington will be having the new trial chassis for the holidays. Can you let me know about when I can have it sent to Peterboro' ? I propose driving 7 CA to that town and changing it for 1X. It will be necessary for 1X to be fitted with the shock absorbers exactly as we propose using them. Regarding the position of the springs below and behind the axle, I shall be pleased if you will continue your experiments to prove whether there is really any marked difference in the way the car [handwritten: back axle] behaves between the two positions. It is difficult for me to believe at present whether or not it is something else that is varying, and not simply the position of the spring. Be very careful not to alter the lubrication of the springs during the experiments. Generally, it is much more convenient for us to fit the springs above the axles, and if it is found advantageous to have them in this position, I should want you to determine as to whether they are benefitted by extra flexibility from the split, or whether this also proves to be a disadvantage.
