Dear Sirs,

We beg to acknowledge with thanks receipt of your letter of the 22nd inst. enclosing drawings of your down-take pipes, which we have very carefully examined.

Whilst it would be quite possible to protect the ends of the tubes and afterwards braze on the flanges, we cannot see how this would be satisfactory as the metal would rapidly scale at the point where the brazing was done.

In connection with the Calorizing of similar pipes for other firms the flanges have been electrically welded on to the pipes before calorizing then completely treated, and have proved very satisfactory.

Owing to the shape of the pipes on your drawing No.E.72868, and to the thin nature of the metal, it would be impossible to Calorize these without a certain amount of distortion taking place. We presume, however, that you can readily rectify this distortion with the same tools with which the pipes were manufactured. If a Calorized article is brought up to a bright cherry heat it can be safely bent without destroying the Calorized surface.

We note your propose sending some pipes to our Works to be treated, and would suggest that you weld the flanges on before despatch, we would treat these for you and you would then be able to see the amount of distortion which takes place.

We might also add that it is much cheaper to completely calorize an article than to protect the ends of tubes which is an intricate process and naturally add to the cost.

We trust this explanation will make the matter clear to you but will be only too pleased to furnish you with any further details if you will kindly let us know. We shall be much obliged if you will kindly advise us when you send the tubes to our works in order that we can make the necessary arrangements to have them treated as quickly as possible

Yours faithfully, CALORIZING CORPORATION OF GREAT BRITAIN
