P. 2. SPRING CONTROLLED REAR SHACKLE FOR FRONT SPRINGS.

Enclosed is a rprint of N.sch.3452 - proposed flexible rear shackle for front springs on P.2.

The distance between the lower flange of the side channel and the spring edge is the same as now.

The controlling springs oppose the road springs and so relieve the weight on the upper shackle bearings.

It is suggested that, held as shewn, the upper forging need not run up the side channel face, as the existing sheet metal one does, and so simplifies the forging.

The rating asked for as a result of experiment is 11,00 lbs. per inch at the spring eye, each spring being required to give half this rating. The movement asked for at the spring eye is .093".

It does not seem possible to arrange this shackle on J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3. and 25HP precisely in this way, because of the short distance between the frame and the spring eye, but we are investigating some alternative suggestions.
