H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} X1282 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/MJ.4.8.36. RE. DEPOT SHEET NO.306. USE OF LEAD PETROLS. With reference to H7/H27.7.36. It is obviously quite impossible for us to test various brands of petrol available on the Continent. On our 15,000 miles endurance runs in France we stick to Esso or Azur, as tested and proved satisfactory. The people who should say what are the best petrols to be obtained in France are the Paris Depot. If they could be asked to supply the information once every twelve months we would be kept reasonably up to date. The difference between Alcohol and Ethyl petrols is that the amount and quality of the Ethyl added to proprietary brands is very strictly controlled by a central organisation which is the Ethyl Corp. of America. For this reason we believe that an Ethyl Alcohol fuel will always be more reliable than simply an Alcohol petrol mixture. In view of the foregoing we propose to amend the Depot Sheet so that it covers all Esso petrols on the Continent sold under that name, and Azur. We do not propose to mention Alcohol as a specific recommendation although we have never taken up the attitude that the Bentley is unsuitable for use with Alcohol fuels.
