Dear Sirs, Attention of F.{Mr Friese} J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Hardy, Esq. We have received your letter of the 5th instant, reference as above, and also the roller to our M.21116, which you have sent us for examination. We are returning this herewith, and you will be able to examine this yourselves, as we have cut it in half and etched the same. On examination we found that the hardness of the internal cone is not quite up to specification, and further, that the case at this point is not quite as thick as it ought to be, due to too much having been left for grinding off after heat-treatment. We are arranging to replace this roller, assuming that this is what you wish, and we are taking steps to avoid a recurrence of this defect as far as possible in future. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for giving us a chance of examining this roller. In regard to the 1.7/16" steering gear with the outboard roller bearing, and your query as to whether we can modify the first gear of this type which we supplied for the Bentley car we have gone very carefully into this and find that so many modifications and renewals would be required that it would probably be cheaper to supply a new gear to this specification. - 1 - | ||
