ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. SPRINGFIELD, MASS. Y3806 Oy1-E-41427 April 14th, 1927 Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives, Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Derby, England. Re Bijur Lubrication System Dear Mr. Hives: The lubrication-system parts requested by you in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/LG.152.27 were at last despatched on April 8th. They were held up for a long time awaiting new parts coming through production. Altogether we have sent two sets of parts with a few over. Mr. Haldenby has the list of parts and arrangement drawings showing how they are used. Several improvements are now in hand, and I am sending you prints of them. (1) Banjo fittings. We are much impressed by the superiority of the "Banjo" type pipe-fitting which came in on the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I, over the conventional union. We are already using it extensively but are arranging to use nothing else but the banjo fittings on the Bijur system at a convenient date. The advantages are: With aluminum washers - a tight joint is much easier. The pipe is not twisted in tightening or unscrewing. The banjo fitting lends itself to neater design as it avoids the loop (see sketch) which commonly occurs at the drip plugs or where the oil passage has to pass through the frame. When attached to a screwed-in connection like a drip plug the pipe will not be twisted and broken by careless unscrewing of the plug with the union still attached. | ||
