| RM {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 's COPY BY.1/G.6.1.39. AGENDA FOR CHASSIS CONFERENCE - 9TH. JANUARY 1939. PHANTOM 111. OIL COOLER. As a result of persistent trouble with the oil coolers, we feel that the only way we can make the car reliable from this point of view is to delete the cooler, our experience being that even with the best design of cooler and the improved deep soldering methods, failures still occur. There have been six failures under these conditions. Our reason for expecting white metal big ends to stand up reasonably without coolers, is based upon the fact that we are getting better mileages on these rods than we anticipated. In any case the only fear we had was in connection with engines driven over straight continental roads, and the recent warning in regard to maximum sustained speeds should keep us within safe limits on the bearings. [Handwritten] TAKE OFF COOLERS. REMOTE CONTROL. As the result of work done on the existing control fitted to 35-EX. the operation is very much more reasonable, and indicates that the scheme Hdy. {William Hardy} is working on will be satisfactory. [Handwritten] HDY {William Hardy} WORKING ON COLUMN. SPECIAL OVERDRIVE. This scheme is a Warner design. It is suitable for any of the boxes, but in the first place we propose to fit it to a Wraith car. The scheme is that in which either of the top gears is introduced by a special use of the accelerator pedal. The scheme is fitted to all Chryslers and Studebakers. Sales should therefore make an opportunity of trying one of these, and let us have their re-actions at an early date. At Derby we certainly like the scheme. [Handwritten] OVERDRIVE ON B.V NOT ON B50. MODIFICATIONS FOR 'F' SER.IES. It has been agreed to shelve discussion of these until such times as the 'F' series has to be ordered. The one feature which requires experimental work is the Wraith type tappet. This has been instructed and work is proceeding on it experimentally. | ||
