X5430. RECEIVED 1932 MAY 18 HC Ds/MV. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c.c. Py. Mr. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} L.2/HP.13.5.32. 20/25 HP. Chassis "C" Steering Change speed & Brake Levers. --------------------------------- We have found by trying various chassis that the radial clearance between the knob of the gear lever and the stem of the brake lever should be not less than 2", otherwise when changing into third gear the knuckles are damaged on the edge of the brake lever. On "C" steering this dimension comes out at 1.5". It is not possible to push the brake lever more forward, as already it is embarrassing to the shape of the scuttle particularly with the long bonnets, and we are bringing in your modification to bend the brake lever handle vertical to ease this position. It is not possible to bend the change speed lever knob vertical because this knob is already rubbing against the leg in the top gear. The only rational move that appears to us is to swing the change lever mechanism back a half an inch nearer the seat, but as the present clearance with the seat is only about 1½" we propose to cut 1/2" off the cushion, and make it 19½" wide instead of 20". We are proceeding to act on these instructions for "C" steering, and should like to know if you see any objection to them from the coachbuilders point of view, also if any revision of the seat width on E & F steerings would be advisable to keep them all in line.
