I have now had the opportunity of making a lengthy test with the two special lubricated butterfly valves for the exhaust down-take. One of these has been fitted to 103-MC., the second to our open Trials Car, 70-EF. In the case of the former car lubricating by this means was quite successful until after about a week of running, during which 1200 miles were covered, when we lost the lubricator, which fell off, after which only engine oil could be used, but this was quite successful in preventing squeaking, although the valve tended to become rather stiff in working, causing rather a heavy load at the accelerator pedal, and occasionally there was some tendency to stick open. As regards 70-EF, the working of this lubricator was found to be completely successful. No other difficulties such as tightening up of the valve were observed and the addition of lubricant by this means once a week was found adequate to keep everything in proper working order, and free from squeaks. The lubricator is therefore considered to be satisfactory for the purpose intended. Can it be pushed forward for standardisation as soon as possible, as it is a most urgent need? CWB. | ||
