R.R. 235A (100 T) (S.H. 159. 11-8-20) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2800 TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} [Handwritten and struck through: Copy to Mr Olley & Mr Platford Mr Claremont] re. CARBURATION. [Handwritten: X766 X8080 X8230] I have suggested a scheme for increasing the temperature of water to the throttle valve and carburetter, which is found to be so beneficial, by taking the hottest water leaving the cylinder head, to the bottom of a superheater round the exhaust pipe and there increasing its temperature over and above the hottest of the cooling water, even to making steam that would condense in the carburetter jacket, and if possible raise this as near as possible to 100°C. This seems rather a valuable idea unless Mr. Hives finds that equally good results can be obtained by heating the air going to the carburetter (in cold weather), and only heating the throttle jacket to the usual water temperature of about 75°, which is about the limit of the present and usual arrangement. This idea should be tested temporarily (gas burner and pipe) at once, as if found promising it should be protected at once - English provisional. We are hoping to find an induction pipe less dependent upon temperature - i.e. equally good distribution with less heat. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
