-2- According to Mr. Hall the heat treatment has not been strictly adhered to and that the Brinell figure has not been taken as specified. The Brinell figures of several bearings have been 36 whereas the specification calls for 40-50. In addition the tin element in the alloy has been running too high. These points have all been taken up and the future bearings and alloy will adhere strictly to the specification. This does not confirm however that we shall be out of trouble and our next move is to obtain corrected bearings both for endurance and 10,000 miles test for which a unit is now being produced. The inconsistency of which we spoke earlier in this report is that while bearings have hammered out resulting in increased clearance we have had one case where the clearance after running has reduced by .0015 on the main bearings.
