40/50 HP. CHASSIS. FRONT SPRINGS.

On the assumption that the new type springing will get through the trials and pass Sales, it is necessary for me to define clearly so that everyone understands the position, how the poundages are arrived at.
In the new scheme of springing inaugurated by R, which will be standardized by the French runs, the total number of spring poundages we are permitted to work to is 1100 to 1350, inclusive, rising in increments of 50 lbs.
The ordinary all-open cars and light closed cars will be fitted with springs which have 100 lbs added against the calculated poundage. This represents, by the addition of the 100 lbs, the 20% stiffer spring which it is proposed to use on Continental cars and on any English cars which are likely to do Continental touring. We assume that open cars, all-weathers and cabriolets will come under this heading.
Heavy Pullman and Limousine Cars for use in England will only have the 12½% stiffer spring fitted, and this applies even if they are occasionally going to be used Abroad. Where this type of car, however, is intended for use Abroad normally, the 20% stiffer spring will be fitted. Extra heavy cars for use Abroad will receive special consideration for each case, as R does not consider there is the same need for the 20% stiffer spring on very heavy cars that obtains for the lighter types.
The third condition is that we intend to tell Sales definitely that where they require light springing because the car is going to be run by an invalid in this Country or confined to English roads, they will have to specify that this is the case, as our normal springing will be the 20% stiffer type.
In regard to the Demonstration Cars for Olympia, these should be fitted with the 12½% stiffer springs of nominal poundages, that is, if the calculation calls for a 1250 spring, a spring showing a label marked 1250 will be fitted.
In connection with the Demonstration Cars in Paris, these will have to be fitted with the 20% stiffer springs, that is, the 100 lbs will have to be
