bigger, or greater in number. They are only neatly at the bottom so as the engine gets oil on a steep grade, when only a little in the crankcase. We could sacrifice some of this virtue, if necessary.

In a new engine, with grit, fluff, etc, in crank-case, the oil should be drained out frequently at first, put in a cock while in our hands, let out the oil every few hundred miles, until the engine settles down. Do not add to the dirty oil in the crankcase ever, but when low let it out, and refil with clean. This should be our strict orders to users, about every 1,000 miles. On the 40/50 we use so little oil that it gets very poor and dirty unless drained and washed out, preferably, with paraffin.
