| ORIGINAL CONFIRMATION OF 'PHONE MESSAGE X. FROM R. {Sir Henry Royce} C. to MR. HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re. AERO ENGINES. R1/M9.2.33. x3998. We are telephoning to Derby this afternoon as follows: 'It is quite certain that the oil supply to the inside of the crankpin must be greatly improved, and that such an improvement will make all the difference in the world. We also can conclude that our fork and blade rod is not good for retaining what little oil manages to get to it. In your communications referring to the oil grooves you have never described precisely the arrangement to which you refer. I have given you exactly my views of the best arrangement, that is, the three radial holes and the two 60° side grooves, and I have pointed out that this avoids any grooves where the maximum centrifugal loads occur. Unless you can prove to the contrary nothing short of my suggestions will satisfy me. It will be understood that it is imperative to do the very best that we know is possible to the present production engines, and that the new engines shall have the most perfect combination of these and all other parts that we can suggest before it goes on to test.
