SAFETY AT WORK PART I.—SERVICE PROVIDED 1. INTRODUCTION The influx of new workers unaccustomed to industry and the return of others who through long unemployment have lost touch, together with the urgent pressure of war conditions, have created special problems connected with the incidence of accidents in factories. Accordingly a particular duty devolves on the management to take even more than ordinary care for the protection of workers in their charge. With these points in mind, the Minister of Labour and National Service has arranged for the further development of that side of the Factory Department's duties dealing with the prevention of accidents and education for safety. In accordance with the policy of using to the full the services of existing organisations, he has asked for the help of the National Safety First Association, in order that its experience may be grafted onto that of the Factory Department. It must be realised that the scheme now inaugurated can be successful only if it is taken up with vigour and conviction by some person in a position of managerial responsibility, generally working through a works committee of which workers and/or their organised Trade Representatives form a part. The service envisaged will be supplied only to works where the Inspector of Factories is satisfied that these conditions will obtain. That service has been specially designed to deal with war-time aspects of accident prevention and will start in November 1940. 2. THE SERVICE The unit of free service is as follows : A.{Mr Adams} One copy of this pamphlet “Works Safety in War-time,” which lists and explains the service provided and summarises the fundamentals of works safety organisation. More detailed information about organisation will be given in a supplement to the Industrial Safety Bulletin. B. One 30in. by 20in. poster every week. These will be sent out monthly. When the scheme is in full operation they should reach the works by the first Monday in each month. Page Three | ||
