MAIN TEXT: At low speeds the zig-zag ribbon core is the more efficient of the three, the fin and tube being the least efficient at high speeds, the ribbon and air tube core are about equally efficient; the fin and tube becoming markedly inferior to the other two. We have shewn diagramatically the relative efficiency of three of the cores in question, the figures being obtained from some experiments carried out in the Mechanical Laboratory at Yale University by Prof. Lockwood. It should be pointed out, however, that we have not been able to appreciate the large gain which he also indicates should be obtainable with a baffled air cooled core over a plain air tube core. In any case, baffles are to be avoided as they tend to cause the core to fill up with dirt. From tests we have made we believe the continuous zig-zag ribbon to be slightly superior to the air tube at low speeds. contd. | ||
