(311) Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Bwg.{J. C. Bowring}7/KW. 1st December, 1934. Messrs. S. Smith & Sons (M.A.) Ltd., Cricklewood Works, London, N.W.2. Attention of Mr. C.W. Nicholls. Dear Sirs, Jackalls fitted to S-B-IV. We thank you for your letter of the 28th ult. re the above. With regard to the tests carried out on this particular system, we beg to advise you that the Jacks have been used only for normal conditions, that is to say, for raising and lowering the car to and from the ground under normal conditions. On two occasions the car was left jacked up for approx. 16 hours for a pressure maintenance test. Actually the most severe test was carried out by the Writer together with your Fitter on a local test hill after the system had been completed. However, the severity of that test was not such as to cause the bracket in question to fracture. Referring to paragraph 4 in our letter Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Bwg.{J. C. Bowring}27/KW. this was merely to indicate the difference between the fitting of the N/S rear bracket and the O/S rear. The location of the former was correct, the face of the location piece being in contact with the spring pad, whereas the latter had approx. 1/4" between the face and the spring pad, so that the stability of the O/S rear Jack relied solely upon the tightness of the bracket on the axle tube and was not aided by the location piece. | ||
