6011. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/RC.{R. Childs}7/MH.{M. Huckerby} 23rd. November 1937. Messrs. The AC-Sphinx Sparking Plug. Co. Ltd., Dunstable, BEDS. For the attention of Dr.Benion Brown. Dear Sirs, You are making up for us a speedometer and rev-counter of the concave dial type for use on our cars. We understand from recent conversation with you, that to reduce the "revs-per-mile" of the speedometer would present no difficulties, and, to enable us to fit this instrument to any of our experimental Bentleys without the necessity of alteration to gears, we would like it to operate at 795 revs per mile. Would it be a big job to alter the speedometer of the bevel glass type, recently delivered to us, to the same figures? We should like the revs-per-mile figure stamping on the back of the instrument in order to avoid confusion. Will you please supply us, as soon as possible with a speedometer in parts for examination purposes. With regard to the rev-counter, we do not mind if the indicated reading is 5% fast all over the scale, so long as it is not slow, and is 5% ± 1% fast at 4,500 revolutions of the engine. We should like to point out that the figure we give for the speedometer is only for this particular instrument and not to be confused with any that might be ordered for production. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
