Oy10 - G 19821 Sheet #2. Mr. Southern. "Consider brazing should be continued." Undoubtedly the circumstances under which 4-EX axle failed - of sliding over frozen drifts and mud - were by no means exceptional. Mr. Hives will remember that we saw Fords, Buicks, etc. and a number of trucks, making the passage while we were out. We agree with Mr. Hives that the position of the brake shafts close to the lower edge of the axle box and actually well below the bottom of the axle at the outer end where they strike the edges of frozen ruts, is undesirable for American conditions, but think that we should make as strong a job as we can of the attachment of these shafts. We suggest for Mr. Royce's consideration that it is most desirable that these shafts should be moved upwards to a safer position, if the clearances render this possible.
