We send herewith N. sch. 3495. shewing a modification to the valve dashpot to give more damping.

The dashpot dia. is increased from .525 to 1" giving 5.5 times more damping.

If this is too much it can be reduced by drilling the piston, not by giving increased clearance in this case as the piston has to help guide the valve.

For a temporary experiment the valve and its guide can be shortened, the dashpot fit the bore of the control cylinder and external piping connect the space between the dashpot and the control piston to the reservoir, the existing inclined hole being plugged.

Needless to say effective damping is dependent upon the elimination of air from the system [handwritten "dashpot" above strikethrough "system"].
