Dear Skinner, Though 99.9% of our efforts are concentrated on war work, we are still finding it possible to do a little research on subjects such as carburation and petrol consumption. I believe that at the outbreak of war we were beginning to get a clear picture of the limitations which affect fuel consumption, and when John Morris came over to talk injection pumps, he saw some-thing of what we were doing. He showed us your new car-burettor, in which I was intensely interested. Also the elements of his fuel pump. Apart from these two items, which may be so advanced that samples for test are not available, we are particularly interested in part throttle economy on S.U. carburettors. As you know, we obtain our part throttle economy by utilising the pulsations in the induction pipe, on our 6-cylinder engines, to richen up the full throttle, by using two carbs. On cars like the Morris '8' however, on which, as far as we can ascertain, you get a remarkably good petrol consumption, we should imagine that this pulsation effect was not very marked. - Continued - | ||
