X.3647. RE PISTON FOR 10,000 MILES. X.3715. X-3746
X3776
------

I am telegraphing you tomorrow, Monday.

(1) I regret that the plunger type of piston does not yet appear satisfactory. It bears out with my first impression of this idea so that it was excellent for education but scarcely practical, probably we shall make it practical later.

(2) I am very pleased to hear that a spring pressure of 85 lbs. obviates all knocks. Mr. Elliott's calculations indicate that somewhat more may be added.

(3) X.3776. On Saturday we sent you the design of a piston described in one of my recent letters viz. (R/F's 22.12.19) - a flexible or plunger part on the non-power side forced outwards by the pressure of a steel spring or oil pressure in conjunction with an adjustable stop. This scheme seems to work out best with A Recardo type piston, other parts of the piston is like the one recently sent for the plunger type.

(4) We feel sure that from recent experiments, pistons from this design will be found the best and most practical we have so far tried, it has the following features.
(1) It is flexible.
(2) It is adjustable when new and for wear.
(3) It is collapsable.
(4) It does not create unnecessary friction.

(5) Please consult with Mr. Wormald and if this can possibly be ready for the 10,000 miles, I believe it will be

Contd.
