D E R B Y : FOR THE ATTENTION OF MR. W. A.{Mr Adams} ROBOTHAM. Dear Sirs, In reply to your letter of the 3rd instant, we now have pleasure in sending you herewith two prints of our proposal for a uniform Air Jet for testing the efficiency of Car Radiators. We assume that you will require 30.HP. to drive the necessary four-bladed airscrew. You will see that a cowl has been provided between the airscrew disc and the 5' square honeycomb. We think it desirable that you should maintain a clearance of 3' on all sides of the air jet, and that the jet should be allowed to empty itself into the open so as to avoid any disturbances from reflection and eddies. We can recommend to you a hydraulic coupling between the 30.HP. A.C. Motor and the fan. It is probable that Messrs. Hydraulic Coupling Patents. Ltd. 40, Broadway, Westminster, London.S.W.1. will be able to quote you for one of their standard couplings for dealing with that power. We have seen a demonstration of the functioning of this coupling and we are satisfied that a sufficiently accurate control over the speed of your jet can be obtained by its use. The airscrew I have no doubt Messrs. The Airscrew Co. of Weybridge would be glad of the opportunity to quote you a price. The other parts you will no doubt be well able to build up yourselves. We consider that this is the simplest arrangement that can be expected to give you a uniform air jet. We estimate that the serviceable length of the jet will be about 10'. We hold ourselves at your service for any further advice or assistance we can give you, after you have had an opportunity of considering this scheme. Yours faithfully, FOR BOULTON & PAUL. LIMITED.
