In the forward type of Magazine the round can only be placed in the feed opening when the gun has completed its run-out. This makes a delay period whilst the round is being transferred from the magazine to the feed opening. Again this operation takes place at a time when all parts of the gun are stationary and must therefore be performed by some type of power accumulator (such as a stout spring) charged during recoil or run-out and further, the necessary gear having done its work, must be rapidly withdrawn to clear the breech ring before recoil takes place.

Added to all this will be the mechanism for bringing the rounds into place in the magazine and also the various interlocks to ensure that the last round in the magazine is not fired, that the breech block remains open on cease fire and that the gun cannot be fired from the remote control position if the loader so wishes, etc.
