Thank you for your memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/7.R/7.3.38. We have telegraphed this morning :- " 26.G. PISTONS AND BEARINGS EXCELLENT ". The pistons were free from scruffing and showed no cracks when chalk tested. The big end bearings in die cast A.C.6 were the best we have seen. Nos. 2,4, and 6, not flanged, appeared as good in every respect as the flanged type in Nos.1,3,and 5. Nos. 2 and 4 main bearing caps were removed and the white metal found to be free from cracks or grooves. The surface was slightly pock-marked all round. As you wished the job carrying out in half a day and mileage resuming, we did not check the slipper drive poundage as suggested over the telephone. We have not changed the front shackles of the rear springs as it may hold the car up for a day or more on account of the new bushes requiring grinding to size. The rear axle side shake is pretty bad now, so we ought to find out if it is due to deterioration of the present rubber shackles, before the car goes back. Will you please let us know when we may stop running for this purpose. We were not able to do the test on Mobiloil Arctic in the Bentley or to find out any more about steering column shake before it went back. I enclose as requested, particulars of the damage to 6.B.IV. -------------- Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMW.{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux} | ||
