Experience has shown that petrol pump diaphragms must be considered as having a definitely limited life. The only positive way of avoiding trouble in customers' hands is to replace these petrol pump diaphragms as a routine job when a car comes in for decarbonisation. The present procedure of sending the petrol pumps back to the S.U. Co. is considered to be too extravagant, and, in future, we can arrange for someone from each Depot to be instructed how to change petrol pump diaphragms. It will then only be necessary for Depots to carry a stock of diaphragms, complete with spindles, which will be changed over as a definite routine job. Will Depots please appoint a petrol pump expert, and arrange with the Experimental Dept. a date when he can come to the Works. We will then ensure that he gets the necessary instruction. If a car for any reason does not come into a Depot for decarbonisation, arrangements should, if possible, be made with the owner to get hold of the petrol pump when the car has done from 15 to 20,000 miles running, or, alternatively, when the pump has been in service from 18 months to two years.
