1305 EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FWK.7/JH. 24th. August, 1939. The Eaton Manufacturing Co. Leaf Spring Department. For the attention of Mr. Wallis. Dear Sirs, Our Mr. Kennington has returned to Derby and has mentioned to us your offer to design a leaf spring suitable for our chassis. We are taking advantage of this co-operative gesture and are accordingly sending you a print FW.1781 of our present rear road springs. Naturally the print is only intended to serve as a guide to the leading dimensions such as eye size main leaf width and length, static deflection, etc. We would point out however that if you consider any advantage could be accrued from an alteration to any of these dimensions, barring static deflection, we would like you to modify the design accordingly. You will notice in our print that the leaves are of flat section and have oil ways cut in them. This scheme is shortly being dropped and the Toledo grooved section leaf together with interleaving is taking its place. We would therefore suggest that your design incorporates these features. You will also note that the spring is flat under normal load and we would like you to lay out two designs, if possible, with two different normal loads namely 1,000 lb. and 1,200 lb. We do not want you to bother unduly with clip sizes, interleaf thickness etc. The main points in which we are interested and the number, length and thickness of the spring leaves. At the same time we are particularly anxious to keep the spring weight a minimum consistent with long life. | ||
