Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} } FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} } E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Sq. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} X7310 R7/M22.8.30. X.7310 X.5310 X.523 CAR WORK - CHANGE GEAR POSITION. We are looking upon this as a very urgent matter. It is difficult to get anything sufficiently good - practical, robust, and suitable for the high torque of the RR. Phantom engine. The helical sideshaft gear which we adopted so many years ago has done much to make our standard boxes of the ordinary type better than those of other makers. We believe however, that it is time we must make some improvement to the 2nd. and 3rd. speed gear, and in addition to our efforts with regard to a complete epicyclic box we have already tried several less sweeping modifications, and we shall hope to be in a position in a month or so to have a more silent 2nd. and 3rd. speed which must be easier to change, and we consider that at least these 2 speeds must have this feature, and that they must include both greater silence of gearing and increase in facility of changing. I have put both Ds. and Hdy.{William Hardy} to work continuously on this subject until we get something worthy of RR. The American attempts we think do not go far enough; they should include the 2nd. speed. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
