B1/B21910. 21st September 1910. Mr. Royce, Re Compression Volumes of Standard Engines. Mr. Platford is very anxious that we should increase our standard compression volume from 24 1/2 cu. ins. to 25 3/4 cu. ins. He tells me that the engines are too harsh to pass test, and that to every engine he is now fitting 80 thou. liners, and also machining the tops of the stud bosses to suit. The figure for the compression volume of 24 1/2 cu. ins. was arrived at, originally, after due consideration by Mr. Platford, but he suggests that there is the possibility of an error in his measurements in consequence of an air lock in the cylinder head (the compression volumes are measured in the shops with the cylinders upside down, to preclude this error), but it is possible that we are getting more power now than when his measurements were taken. Mr. Wormald would like this matter decided immediately, so will you kindly telegraph whether I shall issue the necessary instructions. B.B.
