AIR MINISTRY GENERAL SPECIFICATION NUMBER D.T.D.116

FOR

ETHYLENE GLYCOL

July, 1929.

(1) Description. - The material shall be a clear, colourless liquid, free from visible impurities. It shall be miscible with water in all proportions.

(2) Specific Gravity. - The specific gravity at 60°F. {Mr Friese} (15-6°C.) shall be not less than 1-115 or more than 1-118 when compared with water at the same temperature.

(3) Distillation Range. - The distillation range of the material as determined by distilling 100 c.c. in the Standard Distillation Apparatus (B.S. Specification 3 D.15) at the rate of two drops per second, shall be such that the first drop distils over at a temperature not below 185°C.(365°F. {Mr Friese} ) and not less than 95 c.c. shall distil over between 190°C.(374°F) and 200°C.(392°F. {Mr Friese} ), without frothing or showing signs of decomposition.

(4) Neutrality. - The material shall be neutral to phenolphthalein and methyl red when 10 c.c. are shaken with 10 c.c. of recently boiled and cooled distilled water.

(5) Freedom from Impurities. - The material shall be free from chlorides and sulphates.

(6) Freezing Point. - The freezing point of a mixture of equal volumes of the material and water shall be not higher than - 30°C. ( - 22°F. {Mr Friese} ). No deposition of solid shall occur when the mixture is maintained at this temperature for 1 hour, with frequent shaking.

F. {Mr Friese} V. {VIENNA} HOLT,
Air Commodore,
Director of Technical Development.
