WHEATLAND WORKS, SEACOMBE, CHESHIRE, ENG. 24th May, 1937. I/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 4741. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby. For the attention of Mr. F.{Mr Friese} Martindale. Dear Sirs, We have now prepared the test Liners of "Safeguard 400" containing increased amount of metal, as mentioned in our letter of April 6th. Whilst this has had the desired effect of lowering the co-efficient of friction in the lower temperature regions, we find that the durability has been adversely effected as compared with the material we previously supplied. However, we have prepared a set in this special material which we are submitting for your tests, as you may find, under your test conditions, that the frictional properties and durability may satisfy your requirements. In view of your interest in a Lining having a rather high co-efficient of friction, we are of the opinion that you would find our "Safeguard 400" non-metallic to be better suited to your requirements than the special material mentioned above. The co-efficient of friction of this Lining is extremely uniform up to 300°C., whilst the durability is much better than the metallic variety containing the greater amount of metal reinforcements. We are, therefore, submitting a second set in this material and we feel sure that this will give you the results you desire. We will be interested to have any comments you may care to make on these materials in due course, and trust that you will find one or the other to be satisfactory. Yours faithfully, GANDY'S.
