RE ACCESSIBILITY OF BATTERIES ON EXPERIMENTAL CARS.

I asked my assistant to let me know of any cases which did not comply with R's paragraphs :-

"These must be very conveniently accessible without detaching any electrical connections or moving the battery in any way.

We ought to be able to take the acid density with the standard apparatus supplied by the battery makers for that purpose, and fill up with a very small jug, or other easily obtainable utensil."

and in answer to this I have received from him the following:-

"The batteries on 12-EX are very inaccessible, the rear unit cannot be seen at all as regards level of electrolyte and has to be topped up with the hydrometer which is also very inconvenient to get in. It also appears that the cable ends have to be removed before the cable can be pulled out of the slot in the box.

The battery on 10-EX has one cell which is very inconvenient, this comes beneath the cross member and is difficult to remove the vent plug, and also for topping up unless a funnel is available.

In both the above cases the battery box would have to be dropped to remove the battery."

I think you know of these cases. It is understood that they are exceptions to the correct arrangement for the newer cars, which arrangement we understand will always satisfy the required conditions. It is to be noted, however, that chassis 12-EX is the one which at present is undergoing a 10,000 mile test in France with a view to standardisation of certain items. We should like your comments on this point.
