M.E. FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} SECRET Copy to - C.L. P.S. RM.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. THROTTLE GOVERNOR CONTROL. 48140 DI + 17 Regarding the above, the extra opening to 40° seems quite a lot and is putting our governor at a disadvantage. If we can do it without risk of trouble, do so, but if not, reduce to 30°. Regarding scheme 624, there is one thing I should alter to avoid risk of the lever fouling by having to pass exactly clear between the arms of the double lever. The roller could be wider and carried on an overhanging pin. There looks plenty of room for scheme shewn below. wider. Ample clearance. Say 15°. 15° to 30°. I think we are not getting the best from the idea of Variable Speed, as we have it now, and with your proposed modification the speed of opening goes down to O, and hence we lose time, whereas we ought to go down to a minimum speed of opening considerably greater than O.{Mr Oldham} Much larger roller, but I fear we cannot rely on rollers always being free enough to turn, but bigger ones would.
