BENTLEY REAR AXLE.

Herewith a copy of Messrs. Hoffmann's reply to my letter of the 15th inst., and the print 41-477K. Section 96 which they refer to.

It will be seen that they do not recommend an increase of bore to 1.3/8" with an outside diameter of 3", and as 3" appears to be the limit in the present casing it looks as though we have no alternative to the one piece bearing with the present casing.

For new construction the use of a standard roller bearing R.335 35 x 80 x 21 (1.3775" x 3.15" x .828") would give the necessary extra metal in the races of the thrust bearings.

It appears to us that if quotations show an appreciable saving for the separate bearings with standard roller bearing, we should try this scheme for the permanent design disregarding the liability of increased lack of concentricity referred to by Messrs. Hoffmanns.
