SUPER SPORTS ENGINE. X459

Engine No. S.S.3.
Total running time to date 46 1/2 hrs.

Running conditions:-
Standard Phantom carburetter.
Hot spot in action. (Water temp.= 75oC)
Exhaust manifold and complete bed system fitted.
116o Camshaft (E.77322).

A power curve of this engine has been taken when fitted with a standard Phantom carburettor (see V.445). This carburettor was attached to the vertical fishtail of the underfed six-point induction pipe by means of a small elbow. The nozzle (E.77799) was removed from the induction pipe (see report dated 19.9.28).

This engine has not been run much recently owing to it having been in the hands of the fitters for gear quietening, also the cylinder head has been removed for tests concerning the flow of gas through the inlet valves. The purpose of these tests is to ascertain whether the flow of gas through the inlet valve is restricted by the screening effect of the walls of the turbulent head. As these tests are not yet completed, they will be reported upon at a later date. An aero engine supercharger is being used for this test.

Later.

The petrol consumption of this engine when fitted with a standard Phantom carburettor has been ascertained, and will be found plotted on V.455.

The exhaust of this engine is rather noisy; the
