TBB12/L20612. June 20th. 1912. Mr Royce. Re Valve Springs. The taper valve springs which you recommended will be placed on order to-day (June 20th). Mr Nadin has obtained a number of special valve springs made from ribbon; these were delivered on June 19th and will be tested immediately. We obtained some untempered valve springs for the purpose of heat treatment at the works. Mr Wormald however was unable to discover the correct treatment for the material supplied and could obtain no satisfactory results. He is inclined to think that unsuitable material was intentionally delivered. The question of obtaining raw springs seems to be a difficult one and it seems doubtful we shall obtain any satisfaction unless we buy raw steel from a reliable maker and wind the springs ourselves. This Mr Wormald is not at present prepared to attempt as it requires special tackle. I understand from Mr Nadin that we cannot order raw springs from a spring maker specifying a certain quality of steel. This being so I think we must be working in the dark to a very considerable extent until we can obtain raw material to our own specifications and wind the springs ourselves. Mr Nadin however is sending [Handwritten on left margin]: 1290 | ||
