Copy -------------------- From: BENTON & STONE LTD. CEL/EGH ROY {Sir Henry Royce} 10/MG19.9.24, Bracebridge Street BIRMINGHAM September 23rd.1924. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Sirs, We beg to acknowledge receipt of yours of the 19th inst., with reference to the number of failures in connection with Grease Guns. We have carefully gone into this matter and in a number of cases the failure has been in the angle connection, and as you know, this has now been modified and improved. Secondly there has been a few failures in the barrel which have undoubtedly been caused through a defect in the metal billet from which the tubes are drawn, and this defect is most difficult to find and impossible to see, but we are testing up hydraulically to a higher pressure hoping that the fault will show itself while under test instead of appearing later when the gun is put into service. The last fault is with the flexible connection and there are given every possible attention and are tested up to pressures at least five times higher than the pressures developed by the gun in use. Although we replace these free of charge quite a number of the flexes returned have had very hard usage, and truthfully speaking in a number of cases unfair usage. The flexible metallic connection at any time is a delicate piece of work and unless used with reasonable intelligence is absolutely certain to give way. The flexible we use, however, and the braiding protecting same are certainly the best possible obtainable and providing same is used with reasonable care we guarantee that this part will give no trouble. We pay the very closest attention to the manufacture of this article and are always doing out utmost to detect anything which is liable to cause trouble later. Assuring you of our best attention at all times. Yours faithfully, BENTON & STONE LTD. Director. [Stamp: ENCLOSURE No 45 "JUSTSO"] | ||
