X2200 ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. SPRINGFIELD, MASS. OYll.R.2.28.28 February 28th, 1928. Mr. E.W. Hives, Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby, England. (Copy for attention Mr. R.W.H. Bailey) Dear Mr. Hives: RE CLUTCH SECTION 6000 Further to my letter OY5.R.12.29.27 describing the new Russel single plate clutch, the manufacturers have now sent me the attached two photographs of which one pair is sent to yourself and another to Mr. Bailey herewith. Photo 105 shows the arrangement of the clutch operating levers designed to produce gradual engagement and release by cam action without the use of spring loaded discs etc. Photo 106 shows the construction of the disc which is built up of fabric moulded on to sheet metal spokes mounted on a hub containing a nonmetallic disc which gives a certain amount of flexibility to the assembly. We should like to repeat that from our actual test of this clutch in a demonstration car belonging to the Russel Company, we believe it has interesting possibilities for a simpler construction combined with smooth engagement similar to that obtained with the old Silver Ghost cone clutch. Very truly yours, Maurice Olley MO r/ Encls. | ||
