1180 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}3/AP. June 19th 1937. J.N.Longley Esq., Chief Chemist, Messrs Ferodo Ltd., CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH. Dear Mr.Longley, Confirming my telephone call of yesterday. I quite understand that the weaving of special yarn in small quantities must take time, and I am therefore pleased to hear that there is a chance of it being ready in a fortnight. This is the yarn with the double lead strand. We have tested the M.R.3. and in spite of your doubts about it we rather like it. It has not a marked fade, it has a very high µ value (almost too high) and only once on the rig did it emit a very faint noise. It occurred to me that M.L. fabric (13% lead in finished lining) impregnated with M.R.3. bonding might be better than either material and therefore I am very pleased that you will make us the following samples for test purposes, in M.L.3. GB.750 - 8 pieces. GB.751 -12 " GB.752 - 8 " GB.754 -12 " As regards the order for six complete sets of Bentley linings, placed about the 23rd of last month, I have examined our order, and on it I see we asked for your price and ordered it unconditionally, contrary to our usual custom of ordering it at a stated price. This may have misled your Accounts people. We have a considerable number of experimental cars and when we like a lining we fit it to most of them, Phantoms, 20-25.H Bentleys, and certain non-standard cars also. This is strictly experimental testing, but if we are asking for too much gratis we can revert to the previous system. You will remember that you initiated the present one. continued | ||
