We have obtained from Derby a print of what is being tested for the above, and this print (Sch.1101.) is attached.

Arising out of the 10,000 miles test there is a complaint that this cover leaks oil at the front end and arrives at a metal to metal contact, also that two fastenings are insufficient.

So far as we understand the felt strip and spring holding down were introduced by Derby on account of noise from the valve gear.

If felt must be used we should like the outer lip to definitely lap over the cyl. head as in fig. 1. on blueprint of LeC.2651. attached. We think the lip in Sch.1101. probably lodges on top of the cyl. head.

We should also like to clamp the cover down by direct pressure, using say a flat spring washer only under the thumb nut to lock it.

On the other hand we should like to get rid of the felt altogether and try some scheme such as fig.2. in which all flat surfaces are banished from the cover to eliminate drumming.

A third scheme would be to combine figs. 1. and 2.

The side elevation shews how 4 holding down studs instead of 2 could be used.

Owing to the rocker mechanism being arranged in two units there is no central stud to suit a three stud fixing.

It would be possible to add a special stud in the centre out of line, and use a grouping thus:
