Messrs Rudge Whitworth Ltd.,
COVENTRY

For the attention of Mr.Hack.

Dear Sirs,

In reply to yours of the 24th inst., we have still in our possession the two alum. bronze castings ordered from Messrs. Wm. Mills., which we observe you would be willing to buy from us. These castings were ordered as standard jobs to M.3491Xl, no casting modifications being called for and no subsequent machining having been carried out.

With regard to the second part of your letter, we are enclosing a copy of the final report on this engine, in which you will observe that a great variety of running has been carried out, not with the object of increasing the power of your unit, but rather attempting to analyse its remarkable brake performance, and compare this with our own units, to the benefit, we hoped, of the latter.

As your own investigations followed on the lines of increasing power output, we imagine that you yourselves probably know considerably more about obtaining maximum power per litre than we do, who are limited by considerations of noise, slow running etc.

However, a certain amount of information has been gathered, and we have for some time been of the opinion that the critical feature of engine power is the inlet valve size and timing, and as you will observe on referring to Fig.XXXV. of the attached curves, you appear to have appreciated this fact as well, and taken full advantage of it.

We trust therefore, that the attached report will be of some assistance in your production, if not in your racing engines, and if there are any points on which we could possibly give you more information, we shall be only too glad to give you every assistance in our power.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS ROYCE LIMITED
