We have designed a rig for determining the total pressure exerted by the thrust springs of Borg & Beck clutches, without dismantling the clutch, beyond removing it bodily from the flywheel. The rig will take either the 11" clutch of the 25/30 or the 10" clutch of the 4¼-litre Bentley, and the test can be carried out in less than 10 minutes. The particular advantage of the rig is that it measures the actual poundage applied to the driven plate under working conditions, and if it is suspected that the springs are too strong resulting in grap or excessive pedal pressure, or too weak resulting in slip, the rig will at once reveal whether or not the springs are the cause of the trouble, in which case the unit can be returned to W. for corrections. We have had one of these rigs in use for some time at W. and have found it so useful that we have made another for N. and K.{Mr Kilner}, the suggestion being that it be installed at N., so that any clutches to be tested by K.{Mr Kilner} can be quickly dealt with. The bench space required is about two feet, or a wooden stand can be made. The writer proposes to bring the rig to N. by road on Friday next, July 1st. arriving about 11 a.m. when he can explain and demonstrate the use of the rig, and we suggest that a representative from K.{Mr Kilner} be present bringing with him a 10" clutch or two. Will Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} and Pk. kindly let us know if this date will be convenient. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRC.{N. R. Chandler} | ||
