- 2 - continued:- EVE/IH.22.2.34. be quiet. Having now quietened some of the worst features of the car, we appreciated the whistle which came from the end of the water gutter at the side of the roof and we faired this off with plasticine to cure the noise. Some attention will have to be paid to the way this gutter is finished off so that the air does not pass a sharp edge. We were able to try also a four-door Saloon Car similar to our standard by Messrs. Freestone & Webb, but we were not able to conduct any experiments. This car was distinctly bad and had more wind noises than our standard, due to its very peculiar features, such as, square pillars with a overhanging bead of rubber at the sides. There was no attempt to overlap the front edge of the Sunshine roof and the door shuts whistled badly. The roof fabric on the sliding member was insufficiently tensioned and not damped by padding. We have now been able to come to several conclusions and we are embodying these improvements in the next experimental body for Bentley - B.H.4. One general conclusion which we are forced to is that whilst slots with sharp edges may be made quiet if the position of the edges is accurate, it is a far better manufacturing proposition to either round the edges of the slot, or to place a bead in front of the leading edge, because the degree of accuracy required to produce a silent joint is then not nearly so high.
